Still working my way through this long piece, and I’ve never seen the movie, but now I desperately want to. Gregory Peck and a level of military authenticity virtually impossible to achieve under any other circumstances? Sign me up.

Paul Mantz performed a crash landing in the beginning of the movie, belly landing a B-17 right on the marks for the sum of $4500, then the highest sum paid for a stunt. He flew the plane alone. Nobody had every taken off in a B-17 solo before and it was unclear if it could be done. He did it.
